Gem Shows are popular events for more than just industry professionals. Amateur enthusiasts, avid collectors, and sellers of precious gems, metals, and jewelry can all find much to enjoy (or profit from) at a Gem Show. Every year Tucson, Arizona is host to one of the largest gem and mineral shows in the world. Attending can be an exhilarating and awe-inspiring experience should you know your way around large scale events like this. The Tucson Gem Show occurs every year between the months of January and February. This year, Tucson’s Gem Show will be in town February 2nd through the 17th and will be held at the Tucson Convention Center. People from all over the world come to the show in hopes of finding hidden treasures of their very own. Before embarking on a road trip to your nearest gem and mineral show, I suggest a little homework on what to expect and things to remember to maximize your experience and get the most out of your time and money.
#1 Parking and Arrival:
When going to any large-scale event, you need to acknowledge possible parking limitations. In regards to the Tucson Gem Show, there are multiple parking lots to choose from with the possibility of a connecting shuttle to the show. Some parking lots include Tucson Convention Center, City State Garage, Centro Garage, Pennington Street Garage, and more. The shuttle to the Gem Show is free, so you don’t have to worry about carrying change. However, you will need to go to its pickup location and check the times to see when it will be running. If you aren’t interested in taking a shuttle, you could purchase a day pass for the Sunlink Streetcar. The streetcar runs about every 15 minutes and goes all day long. Lastly, you can utilize an Uber or Lyft. Keep in mind that with rideshare services, you may incur an additional fee during peak hours as the Gem Show will be a highly trafficked and popular event.
#2 Negotiating:
It is always a smart idea to learn some negotiating skills before you attend a popular trade event for bargaining. Bargaining can be stressful and nerve-racking, but with these tips, you will feel more confident in your ability to get the price you want for the products you desire. Many people who attempt their hand at it are often too timid to walk away, but it is something people need to get comfortable doing. By walking away, you have a higher possibility of a seller fighting for your lost interest, not knowing when they'll get it again. In turn, they will be more inclined to accept the last price you were willing to settle on. Another tip to keep in mind is to carry cash when you plan to negotiate. With the ability to offer a cash payment, you may find you have the upper hand and an increased chance of closing the deal with your final bargain offer. Lastly, I would recommend a pleasant demeanor. You may find yourself frustrated when trying to negotiate a price with a tough salesperson, but remain calm. Like with most things in life, you are more likely to get what you are searching for with the right attitude.
#3 Selling:
Although gem shows are an excellent place for buying new gemstones, minerals, watches, and jewelry, it's not an ideal place for selling.
